Discovered during the gold rush of 1897, the Helen Mine quickly became Canada's first major Iron mine. From 1900-1918, 2,800,000 tons of hematite ore was extracted during the mines initial run.

Mining in the Aksu region dates back to the mid-20th century, originally focused on industrial grade Fluorite for steel production but since the 1990's production has been more focused on collector grade specimens.
